                                                         Margaret Baxter 1922-2010

Members of the Alban Lacemakers will be sad to hear of the death of Margaret Baxter on 24th August 2010 aged 88.
She was interested in many crafts, but her interest in lace making began in 1974 when she went to a lace class purely to keep a friend company. The friend gave up but Margaret was hooked and carried on lace making until a stroke in 2002 meant that she was unable to carry on  making lace . She continued her interest in gold work and in crochet however, and came to classes to meet and chat with her friends and do her crochet.
Margaret was a familiar face at lace days and at the  Springetts Lace Fair where she demonstrated with her friend Joyce Field. She was also a regular demonstrator at the Living Crafts at Hatfield and any other venue where she could make lace and chat to people about her craft.
Margaret was a founder member of the Alban Lacemakers and rarely missed a meeting. She  enjoyed meeting friends old and new at our 25th Anniversary Celebrations in 2008.
She went on many lace making  courses and had attended courses on Belgian Laces at the English Convent in Bruges for 20 years and was a frequent visitor to the Kant Centrum.
Bedfordshire Lace was her first love and her lace features in Margaret Turner’s book “Bedfordshire Lace Patterns”, although the Belgian laces took over in later years and her exquisite Binche pieces are a reminder of what a wonderful lace maker she was.
